Issue: Incorrect form and Schedule C business lead to an IRS audit
$$ at Stake: Over $25,000
When a client received an audit letter from the IRS proposing a tax increase of over $25,000, they turned to us for help. Lacking familiarity with tax intricacies, the client was unsure about the reasons behind the audit and sought our expertise to resolve the matter.

Upon reviewing the IRS letter and examining the client’s tax returns, we identified two critical issues that had triggered the audit:
- Incorrect Reporting of 1099-NEC Form: The client had mistakenly reported an incorrect 1099-NEC form, which was later corrected by the issuer. The client should have reported the corrected form instead of the original one. This discrepancy led to a mismatch that caught the IRS’s attention.
- Duplicate Reporting of Schedule C Businesses: The client had erroneously reported two Schedule C businesses when they only had one. Due to an oversight, they had failed to remove one of the businesses, resulting in double entries that raised a red flag during the audit.
Armed with a clear understanding of the issues, we diligently gathered all the necessary supporting documentation to rectify the discrepancies. Our goal was to provide a comprehensive response to the IRS’s inquiries, ensuring that the client’s tax reporting accurately reflected their financial activities.
Despite the complexity of the case and the time it took to gather the required documents, we were able to respond to the IRS audit on time. Throughout the process, the client remained patient, understanding that resolving such audits could be time-consuming.
After reviewing our meticulously prepared response and supporting documents, the IRS agreed to remove the entire proposed tax increase. Furthermore, the IRS corrected the client’s business income/loss, resulting in the client owing no money to the IRS.

The relief and gratitude expressed by our client were overwhelming. They had been spared from a substantial financial burden, thanks to our efforts. This outcome underscores our commitment to providing exceptional service and achieving positive results for our clients.
