Real Case: Client’s Victory Over HSA Error & Newborn Baby

Issue: IRS auditing over HSA overreporting and child care dependent credit for a newborn baby

$$ at stake: almost $10,000

When a client walked into our office with an IRS bill approaching $10,000 and a sense of bewilderment, we knew there were challenges to overcome. Despite struggling to explain the situation, the client suspected that the issue might be related to claiming their children and asked us to resolve it to avoid paying the IRS if possible. We took on the task, ready to uncover the root of the problem and set things right.

Upon careful review, we identified several issues contributing to the IRS bill. Firstly, the client had inadvertently overstated their Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution. Fortunately, this discrepancy could be easily reconciled with the amount reported by their HSA administrator. Secondly, the IRS had denied the child care credit for the client’s newborn daughter, who was born during the tax year. This was a common issue, but one that needed to be addressed promptly.

The Child and Dependent Care Credit is a tax credit that can help offset the costs of childcare or care for a dependent while the taxpayer is working or looking for work. The credit is calculated based on several factors, including the taxpayer’s income, the amount paid for childcare, and the number of qualifying dependents. In this case, the IRS for some reason disallowed the credit.

We explained the situation to our client, who trusted us to navigate the complexities of tax regulations and represent their interests to the IRS. With our client’s confidence in our expertise, we prepared and submitted the necessary paperwork to correct the HSA contribution amount and ensure that the client could rightfully claim the child care credits for their dependents as intended.

After a period of waiting, the IRS reviewed our meticulously compiled supporting documents and acknowledged the corrections. As a result, they agreed to remove the entire bill, providing significant relief to our client. The sense of accomplishment and relief was palpable, both for the client and our team.

This outcome underscores our commitment to providing exceptional service and achieving positive results for our clients.
